Hurricane Season and Your Gutters: What's at Stake
Every year as June approaches, Tampa Bay area homeowners go through their hurricane prep routines. Gutters often get left off that list. That's a mistake that can cost you dearly.
During a tropical storm or hurricane, rainfall rates can exceed 3 to 5 inches per hour, and wind gusts in even a Category 1 storm regularly exceed 75 mph. Gutters that are already compromised don't just fail to protect your home — they become a liability.
Step 1: Schedule a Professional Inspection in April or May
The best time to have your gutters professionally inspected is April or May, before the wet season ramps up and before contractors get swamped with emergency calls.
Step 2: Clean Your Gutters Thoroughly
If your gutters are full of debris going into hurricane season, they will fail the first time a storm rolls through. Clogged gutters overflow immediately and can become heavy enough to pull hangers out of the fascia.
Step 3: Check and Improve Downspout Discharge
Downspout splash blocks should direct water at least 6 feet from your foundation. If your downspouts currently discharge right at the foundation, adding a downspout extension is a simple and inexpensive fix.
Step 4: Consider Gutter Guards Before the Season
Micro-mesh gutter guards can significantly reduce debris accumulation, reducing the risk of mid-season clogs. Avoid cheap foam insert guards — Florida's humidity causes these to grow mold.
Step 5: Repair or Replace Before the Storm
If your inspection reveals issues, fix them before June 1. A repair that costs $200 now beats an emergency replacement call at double the price during peak storm season.
